Castell Alun Friends’ Association
If you’re a member of staff, a parent/carer/relative of a current student or indeed one of our former students then we want you to feel part of Castell Alun Friends’ Association. Any fundraising support you can give to help increase opportunities for our students is greatly appreciated.
You might be able to approach your employer about becoming involved in sponsorship or participating in match funding schemes. You could promote events in your area by sharing them with others via social media, local newsletters and word of mouth. Your involvement with any of the activities, events and fundraisers arranged by the committee would also be very welcome.
Latest News: Minibus Fundraising Plans
We’re being quite ambitious but CAFA’s aiming to raise funds to go towards a minibus for the school. Watch this space for more details over the next few months.
Some of the money raised so far has been used for:
An online Chemistry AS/A resource for key stages 4 and 5
A small contribution towards a high school transition workshop for feeder school Year 6 students
Reading books for nurture group students
Refreshments for the students who participated in the Spring Concert.

Charity Race Night
We’re holding a races night on Saturday 15th July at Pen-y-ffordd Legion and it promises to be a great evening. If you’d like to sponsor a race, please email us for more details. Information about the night, and how to buy tickets, has been sent home with students – please do come along to support the event.
Early Bird Offer – Buy your tickets before 1st July for just £8
Don’t forget to buy your tickets for the race night and social evening on Saturday 15th July 2017! If you buy them before 1st July, you can get them at the early bird rate of just £8 a ticket or £4 for under 18s. The ticket price includes a buffet during the evening.
The evening will begin at 7pm with the first race at 7.30 pm. You can bet on as many races as you like – it’s just £1 a bet. We’ll have a former bookie on hand to work out the odds and tell us how much the people who’ve bet on the winners have won. There will be a total of 8 races with 8 horses per race.
Children are welcome to attend but won’t be able to bet.
You might even decide to become a horse ‘owner’ for just £5 (you can do this even if you can’t make the actual night). If you own the winning horse, you’ll receive a cash prize thanks to the generous sponsorship of the event by local businesses.
If any horses aren’t sold, and one of those horses wins, the cash prize money goes to the school. You can get your tickets and buy your horses from Mrs Southwell at student reception, just send your money in with your son or daughter. Write their name and tutor group on the envelope plus ‘CAFA Races night’.
Castell Alun Lottery
Tickets cost £2 per draw and are on sale all year. There are a total of 12 draws during the academic year; to fit in with the school term, July will be drawn as a double draw. You can join at any time and pay for tickets for the remaining number of draws for the academic year 2016/17 as follows:
May to July: £8
June and July draw: £6
July only: £4
Complete the form which you’ll find via this link and send it in to student reception along with your cheque (or pay directly from your bank account if that’s easier).

We’ll make sure you get mentioned on the CAFA webpage and in email updates too, as well as a link to your website and distribution of promotional materials in school if appropriate.
Cash for Coins
We’re about to start fundraising by collecting old British or foreign coins and notes, even obsolete currency. Initially you’ll see lots of posters around the school as well as the collection bucket. Once all the currency has been collected we send it to www.cash4coins.co.uk who’ll exchange it into cash we can use. The bucket will be here all year so please keep the coins coming!

The CAFA Committee
Our committee is currently made up of a few parents and staff. We had our first meeting in October 2015 and became a registered charity in February 2016. If you’d like to take a more active role in CAFA by joining the committee you’ll be really welcome.
We usually meet on the third Tuesday of each month during term time at 6.15pm and we make sure meetings end within an hour. Please note the next meeting will be taking place on Tuesday 27th June 2017 due to other commitments on the 20th.
