Students at Castell Alun High School are living up to their high expectations in the sporting arena. After a few superb sporting years for the school, recent national successes have once again confirmed the calibre of athletic boys and girls being produced by the school.
Simon, 16, from Penymynydd has taken the Welsh Under 18’s Mountain Biking title and has won a number of events around the country recently.
Cerys, 13 from Summerhill, currently in Year 9 at Castell Alun, has just won the bronze medal in the prestigious AMA Northwest Karate Championships and hopes now to go on to represent her country in the near future. Indeed the current Year 9 cohort encompasses a large number of athletic students, with both the boys and girls teams qualifying for the Welsh Athletics National Championships in Brecon. At the event Issac set a new discus record for Wales – quite a feat! Tegan, 13 from Higher Kinerton, also won her event, the 100m by quite some way and is tipped to go onto great things by many top coaches.
The Boys School Tennis Team also recently won the North Wales qualifying round of schools’ tennis championships and thus qualified for the national UK Rounds. With further personal sporting success Issac again, with team-mates, Will, 15, from Penyffordd, Toby, 13, from Marford, Zac, 13, from Penyffordd and Aiden, 13, from Higher Kinnerton, all represented Castell Alun to a very high standard and are eager to make their mark on the national scene now also.
Sport is a great passion and strength of Castell Alun and the school runs a great variety of sporting clubs and offers various other sporting experiences to students of all ages. The school will hold an Open Evening on Wednesday 5th October, starting at 6.30pm, during which presentations will be given by staff and students, and all areas of the school may be visited and opportunities for extracurricular activities discussed. There will be further options to see the school in session on the mornings of Thursday 6th and Friday 7th October. On top of the successes above, the Castell Alun Boys Football teams are currently Flintshire Champions in Years 8, 9 and 10, with the Year 9 Team also holding the title of reigning Welsh Champions.
