Blog 28th April 2023

As April draws to a close our foreign language classes have now virtually all completed their oral assessments.  We would like to congratulate everyone for their efforts and on their performances, in what can be a nerve-racking environment.  It is now ‘full steam ahead’ into the public examination season and we would encourage students to make the most of the different examination preparation sessions available at Castell Alun.

Yesterday a large number of Year 6 pupils participated in a well-being transition day at school.  Our new intake students appeared to settle in very well.  Everyone was engaged in various fun activities  and the beginnings of new friendships were firmly established.  One Year 6 student commented, “I just can’t wait until September!”.

Today we have two visitors in school to sit in our ‘Dragons’ Den’ and grill a large number of current Year 12 students on their Welsh Baccalaureate Enterprise projects.  Our grateful thanks to Deb Owen and Simon Checketts, who are Regional Managers at Lloyds Bank, for the challenge and guidance that they are currently bringing to so many of our young entrepreneurs.

This week we welcomed two new members of staff to school, Mrs. Debra Clayton (Subject Leader Biology) and Miss Pip Lantos (Rugby Hwb Officer).  We very much look forward to their input and the roles that they will play in bringing high quality education and learning to our students.

Many of you will have seen the new fences which now surround our inner campus.  These have been funded through a specific grant and, although we would perhaps prefer that they were not necessary, we are equally grateful that the fences provide extra protection for our students during the school day.  Safeguarding our students is always our highest priority.

Well done to Lucy and Macy (both Year 7), who both played for Deeside Netball Club under 12s in the Welsh National Regional qualifiers recently.  The girls won all of their games, and consequently finished first in their group.  This means that the team now progresses onto the finals in Pembrokeshire in May. Pob lwc marched!

On a musical note well done to Joseph (Year 7) who recently passed his ABRSM Grade 3 Piano with a merit and also to Lily (also Year 7) who achieved a distinction in her ABRSM Grade 3 Musical Theatre exam.

Year 12 student, Iwan, has an exciting few weeks ahead!   As a member of the academy of ‘Only Boys Aloud’, Iwan has been selected to sing in a massed choir of 300 people from across the UK at the King’s Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle on 7th May. This is an incredible opportunity to be part of history and other acts confirmed include Lionel Richie, Take That and Andrea Bocelli!  Have a fantastic time Iwan, soak it all in and we very much look forward to hearing about your experience!  On Friday 5th May, we will hold a Coronation Main School Assembly, with participants from all year groups.

Please don’t forget that Monday 1st May and Monday 8th May are both Bank Holidays.  Therefore school will only be open from Tuesday to Friday for the next two calendar weeks.

One further advance notice – there will be no study buses running after school on Thursday 11th May, as there is a Year 8 Parents’ Evening on this date.

Enjoy your weekend
