Friday 8th June 2018

I know that a number of you are already looking forward to our Castell Alun Friends Association Fashion and Fizz night on Friday 22nd June at 7pm.  Tickets are still available at £5-00 (£3-00 for under 18s) from the school office or online at https://mydonate.bt.com/events/fashionandfizz.

There will be a limited number of tickets available on the door also.  All proceeds raised will go towards the school minibus fundraising appeal.

Our lengthy external examination season is gradually drawing to a close, with only two weeks left of assessments for students in Years 11, 12 and 13.  A great deal of endeavour has been put into preparations by so many young people and we would urge you all to maintain your focus for these last few days as the end is now in sight.

Over the half term holiday we took 31 lower school students on a sports trip to Barcelona.  Everyone involved had a great experience, with highlights being a visit to the Nou Camp Stadium, the PortAventurer Theme Park and a shopping trip on the famous Las Ramblas main street.

High quality training sessions were provided by professional coaches and our teams participated in a series of scheduled matches also.

Our boys came close to winning their tournament and our girls came out as champions!

I have previously mentioned the golfing prowess of Mathew (Year 10), and now I can report further that Matthew’s younger brother, William (Year 8), came 8th in his age group in the European Boys’ Golf Championships held in East Lothian, Scotland, last week.  Incredibly William now plays off a golfing handicap of 5 at the age of just 12……..  clearly another young man with a bright future!

Joe, a student in Year 10, has just returned from a cricket tour representing North East Wales in the Under 15s team.  Joe and the team won all three games against Cardiff and Vale, Pembrokeshire and Gwent, and Joe took two splendid catches in one of the matches.  Well done Joe!

Over the course of the next few days our Year 7 Transition Team, ably led by Miss Janice Jones will visit a number of our local primary schools.  The team encompasses a small number of current Year 7 students, who are truly wonderful ambassadors for our school.  Thank you to everyone involved for all the effort you have already put in to the vital role of making new students feel welcome to Castell Alun.

Next week our Year 12 students return to school after examination leave and they will be involved Welsh Baccalaureate Activities throughout the week.  All students in Year 9 will sit their CATS (Cognitive Ability Tests) on Thursday also.  We wouldn’t want anybody to feel anxious about these tests, and no prior preparation is necessary.

Long may this lovely weather continue.  Enjoy the weekend.
