Budding ChefsCastell Alun High School students Angel, Year 10 from Llay, Adam, Year 8 from Penymynydd, Adam, Year 8 from Rossett, and Mabli, Year 7 from Caergwle (Primary Category ) have all won a place in the ‘Come and Cook Live Recipe Design Competition’ at the Mold Food Festival.

Each student had to design their own recipe using local produce, write out their method and take photos of that which they made in order to qualify for the public round of the well known competition. For the final round the students will now be required to recreate their recipe in just 1.5 hours on the Wales Cooking Bus.

Of the 5 Secondary School category finalists, 3 were selected from Castell Alun, with Mabli beginning her project whilst at Glan Rafon Primary School and thus participating in the Primary category.

All students were buzzing with excitement. Angel commented, “I’m pretty nervous but I’ve practised my dish a few times so I know I can do it.” Adam added, “I’m really excited, it’s going to be great fun.” Adam would love to become a TV chef and has been cooking since he was 7. He will make salmon and haddock fish cakes with poached egg, followed by Welsh crempogs, berries and cream. He commented, “I just hope I don’t eat all the ingredients first!”

The competition, a highlight of the Mold Food and Drink Festival, is due to take place this weekend.
