School Blog (03/12/21)

Welcome to the School Blog. Although we are in constant contact with Flintshire County Council and other advisory bodies, we confirm that the last day of teaching this term will be Tuesday, 21st December. Thank you for ensuring all students wear masks inside the school building unless exempt. If further mitigations are necessary, we will inform you promptly. We continue to request that parents/carers do not drop into reception to deliver non-urgent items during the school day as we strive to keep our school community healthy and safe. Please book appointments with staff in advance to avoid waiting in our busy reception area.

A huge diolch to Geoff at Ty Draw Farm for our lovely school Christmas tree and the excellent rates for tree purchases. Continuing with the Christmas theme, the Big PTA Christmas Raffle offers a chance to win up to £5,000. A £3 ticket enters you into twelve different draws. Please support school fundraising by purchasing your tickets here.

Last week, Year 12 and 13 Cymraeg students enjoyed a residential trip to the Urdd Centre, Glan Llyn. Over three days, our Sixth Form students participated in invaluable workshops to prepare for their exams. Year 12 students learned about the poignant history of Capel Celyn and visited Tryweryn, while Year 13 students met poet Andrew Shurey. The trip also included adventurous activities like high ropes, canoeing on Llyn Tegid, and swimming. Evenings were spent socialising, enjoying a gig by Jacob Elwy, or toasting marshmallows around a campfire. Everyone had a fantastic time.

On Thursday, all Year 7 students attended off-curriculum sessions. In the morning, they participated in Crucial Crew sessions, receiving vital training on staying safe and assisting in dangerous situations. In the afternoon, they enjoyed Theatr Clwyd’s Christmas Panto ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ with much fun had at the expense of Mr. Ross Bevan, who bore the brunt of many jokes. Thank you to all staff involved in organising and running these events.

We are truly grateful to our local business ‘Dragons’ who spent the day with us today, putting Year 10 students through their paces. To develop vital business skills, students had to explain their business plans and defend their ideas, use of time, and resources when interrogated by specialists in respective areas.

Next week, Year 9 students will develop their communication and confidence in spoken word through ‘Talk the Talk’ sessions on Tuesday or Wednesday. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their oracy skills and ultimately become more employable.

Well done to Olivia (Year 8), who is planning and delivering football sessions at Ysgol Estyn weekly. We are keen to provide opportunities like these to all our students and who knows, maybe we will find more potential Castell Alun teachers this way!

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
