About Castell Alun Sixth Form
The Sixth Form at Castell Alun truly showcases the integral role students play within the school community. They actively contribute beyond academics by engaging in activities like buddy reading, assisting in classrooms, and leading sports coaching sessions. These efforts clearly demonstrate the leadership and responsibility they develop, enhancing their skills and fostering growth. Furthermore, they consistently create a supportive environment that benefits everyone at the school, ensuring a positive impact across the entire community.
The Sixth Form maintains daily contact with a group tutor. This teacher serves as your immediate pastoral and academic mentor, actively supporting, advising, and guiding students when needed. With 12 tutor groups currently in the Sixth Form, these groups represent a diverse range of subjects and maintain direct access to both the Director and Assistant Director of Sixth Form Studies.
Facilities
The Sixth Form occupies a dedicated space adjacent to the main school building. This area includes study spaces for both Years 12 and 13, along with a Common Room for socialising and relaxation. For those focused on independent work, there is also a Silent Study Room, perfect for undisturbed study time.
Students head out from the Sixth Form area for their lessons, moving into the main school building. Additionally, the school provides ample IT facilities, ensuring all students have the resources they need. Year 12 students engage in supervised study, while Year 13 enjoys increased independence as they prepare for the next steps in their journey.
By fostering this structured environment, the Sixth Form helps students develop both academically and personally, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future paths.
Student Life
Many students join our Sixth Form from other schools, enriching our community and quickly becoming valued members of the senior school. We warmly welcome these students, and they soon become integral members and outstanding ambassadors for the school.
Sixth Form lessons are structured across five option lines, with five one-hour lessons each day. Students also have independent study periods and free time built into their schedules.
For example, a Year 12 student studying History, Politics, and German at AS Level, along with the Welsh Baccalaureate, would have two free lessons and six study periods throughout the week.
Our Senior Student Ambassadors represent their peers across the school, attending School Council and Governor meetings, participating in assemblies, and regularly meeting with the Director of Sixth Form to ensure student voices are heard.

Successes
The Seren Initiative, launched by the Welsh Assembly, was created to address the lack of Welsh students applying to elite universities. This programme is designed to support Wales’ brightest young minds, offering opportunities to stretch and challenge their abilities.
To become a Seren member, students typically need five A* grades at GCSE, although extenuating circumstances may be considered for those who don’t meet this standard. Seren students regularly meet to engage in stretch and challenge events alongside their peers from Wrexham and Flintshire, fostering collaboration and excellence within the group.
