As we reach the final week before half term, it has been another busy and successful time for our school community. This week’s blog reflects the breadth of opportunity and achievement across the school. From whole-school assembly reflections for Safer Internet Day to celebrating academic success, sporting excellence and outstanding individual talent, there has been much to celebrate.

Importantly, the week has showcased the determination, creativity and ambition of our pupils, alongside the strength of our partnerships with families and the wider community. We hope you enjoy reading about the many highlights.

On Tuesday 10th February, we marked Safer Internet Day and encouraged students to think critically and responsibly about their digital world. Throughout the week, pupils reflected on digital footprints, online behaviour, cyberbullying and the growing role of AI.

Even short discussions can spark meaningful conversations. Consequently, learners are better equipped to make safe and informed choices online. As part of this work, we hosted an online presentation for parents and guardians. The session was led by Gavin O’Loughlin, Flintshire Digital Learning Officer, who shared practical advice for supporting children’s online safety at home.

Mr Carl Mitchell also outlined how we develop pupils’ understanding of online safety and responsible digital citizenship in school. Furthermore, parents were able to submit questions via a moderated chat function. For those unable to attend, the session was recorded and will be shared on our website. We thank Gavin O’Loughlin, Mr Mitchell and Sarah Thomas for leading and supporting this important work.

In November 2025, Year 9 students took part in the GCHQ National Language Competition. The challenge tested puzzle-solving, code-breaking and deduction skills across familiar and new languages.

Students worked through complex language puzzles involving Swahili and even invented languages. Da iawn to all who took part, especially Erin, Rosie, Maya and Tom, who came first in Wales.

The winning team received certificates and engraved coins from GCHQ, which were presented in assembly by Mr Ellis. Overall, this was a tremendous achievement.

Our A Level Physics students attended the National Space Academy Space Careers Conference at Xplore in Wrexham. The event brought together experts from across the space sector. Students heard from Professor Andrew Newsam and explored interactive industry stands. As a result, they gained insight into the wide range of career opportunities within the space sector.

Importantly, the key message was clear: careers in space extend far beyond astronauts and engineers. Experiences like this broaden horizons and raise aspirations.
We thank Mr Eve and Mr Duffy for accompanying the students. It was a fantastic experience that sparked curiosity and ambition.

We are incredibly proud of George Hughes (7M), who delivered an outstanding performance at the Swim Wales Regional Racing Championships. He competed in nine events across the weekend. George earned two gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Even more impressively, he reduced his combined times by 35.02 seconds.

One highlight was racing alongside Rhys Darbey, a Paris Paralympics medallist. Consequently, this experience proved both inspiring and memorable. George has now qualified for the Swim Wales National Championships in Swansea. We wish him every success.

We were thrilled to welcome Olly to the stage during our whole-school assembly. Following his appearance on Britain’s Got Talent, he performed confidently for students and staff. Recently, Olly played at the O2 Islington with the tribute band Guns 2 Roses. Furthermore, he treated the audience to “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Slither” and “Paradise City.”
After the performance, students lined up to congratulate him. We are extremely proud of his courage and talent.

Last Saturday, our girls competed at the Wales Netball U16 Ann Smart National Schools Finals. They topped their group and progressed confidently to the final stages.
Finishing third overall was a tremendous accomplishment. As they were younger than many competitors, this makes their success even more impressive.

On Wednesday, four teams competed at the Flintshire Shuttletime Badminton Festival. The Year 9/10 girls were crowned overall winners. Meanwhile, other teams delivered determined performances across all age groups. Da iawn to everyone involved.

Year 9 Parents’ Evening will take place on Thursday 26th February at 4:00pm.

As we break for half term, we thank students, staff and families for their continued support. It has been a fantastic few weeks filled with achievement and community spirit.

Mwynhewch wyliau hanner tymor hyfryd – have a lovely half term holiday.
