School Blog (09/02/24)

Welcome to the School Blog. Yesterday brought an unexpected twist! As you may know, all Flintshire schools were informed that it would be a ‘snow day’ due to the weather forecast. This disrupted, but didn’t completely halt, our Year 10 school examinations.

Please note, the exams scheduled for yesterday (Thursday) have now been rescheduled for the week after half-term. If you are affected, expect an email today. The exams planned for today will proceed as scheduled, while those postponed will be held during the first week back. Maths exams will occur on Wednesday morning, beginning during registration. Modern Foreign Language exams will run during language lessons throughout the week. Although the decision to close wasn’t ours, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

We’re eagerly anticipating the half-term break. Students return on Tuesday, 20th February, for lessons. Monday, 19th February, is a staff training day dedicated to discussions about the new school curriculum.

Recently, Year 9 students had a fantastic experience at the Urdd Centre, Glan-Llyn. They combined their Cymraeg skills with science knowledge during a bushcraft workshop, exploring fire triangles. Canoeing and team-building on Llyn Tegid followed, where students learned Welsh geographical terms and about the rain cycle. Using their Welsh communication skills, teams raced to cross the lake.

The afternoon featured high ropes challenges and an archery competition. Our students represented the school admirably, earning praise for their positive attitudes and enthusiastic use of Cymraeg. Today, it’s Year 8’s turn to enjoy a day at the centre and practice their Welsh language skills.

A big di iawn goes to our Year 13 Performing Arts (Acting) students who performed ‘TechSafe Explorers’ at Ysgol Penyffordd. Their poignant performance aligned perfectly with ‘Safer Internet Day’ activities. Diolch to everyone involved!

This week, we want to give a huge shout-out to our Year 7 students who participated in a Wrexham/Flintshire rugby tournament. The girls remained undefeated, showcasing their skills, while the boys put up a strong fight, scoring excellent tries despite some losses. Di iawn to all involved—our future in rugby looks bright!

Continuing the sports theme, a massive ardderchog to Bethan (Year 7), who became Wales Indoor U13 Bronze medallist in the 800m at a Welsh Athletics event. This is a fantastic achievement, and we’re excited to see where it might lead her next! Well done also to our Sixth Form boys’ football team, who travelled to Newtown and won their match. They’ve now advanced to the final eight in Wales and will face Ysgol Friars in the quarter-finals next half-term. Pob lwc, boys!

CAFA (Castell Alun Friends Association) will hold an indoor table top sale on Saturday, 25th February, in the Sports Hall at Castell Alun. The attached poster includes details on how to book a table if you’d like to sell goods. Alongside refreshments and a raffle, there will be the ever-popular pre-loved uniform sale. If you have any pre-loved uniform that no longer fits and want to donate, please drop it off at CAHS reception. Please remember that school won’t be open next week. All profits from the event help fund various school projects, benefiting students in many ways. We greatly appreciate all contributions!

Congratulations to all Year 11 students who have completed their mock exams! Many students were delighted to receive their results, while others gained valuable insights into how they might feel on the actual results day, prompting them to redouble their efforts.

Diolch am eich holl gefnogaeth yn ystod yr hanner tymor. Thank you for your support over this half-term.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
