School Blog (09/05/25)

Welcome to our weekly School Blog. This week marks National Teacher Appreciation Week, a special time to pause and recognise the incredible dedication, passion and care shown by our teachers every single day. If we reflect on the impact teachers have, we see it extends not just in delivering lessons, but in shaping lives. Their influence reaches far beyond the curriculum, and this is our opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you.

One powerful example of how our teachers go beyond the classroom is through the use of AV1 robots, which we’ve had the opportunity to trial this year. These innovative devices have enabled students who are unable to attend school in person to stay connected with their learning and peers in real time. For instance, Tom, one of our students, was away for several weeks representing Wales in rugby abroad. Thanks to the AV1 robot, he was able to attend live lessons and remain engaged with his studies.

This technology has also proven invaluable for students with long-term illnesses or other circumstances that prevent them from being physically present. Acting as their eyes, ears and voice, the AV1 robot allows them to maintain a presence in the classroom from home or hospital. We are currently supporting six students with this facility and helping them to stay connected.

Art and Design continues to be a thriving and dynamic department in our school, with many students engaging in exciting and meaningful projects. Year 8 have been studying the work of environmental artist Kurt Jackson, exploring the connection between art and the natural world. Meanwhile, Year 7 have been inspired by the vibrant, playful style of Welsh artist Rhiannon Roberts, bringing colour and energy to their own creative pieces. Year 9 have spent the year delving into the theme of identity, producing thoughtful and personal work that reflects their experiences and perspectives.

A huge diolch yn fawr to all our GCSE and A-Level students for completing their external exams—your hard work and commitment have been truly commendable. Art is a subject that demands focus and time management all year round, as students balance coursework and exam units. It remains a powerful outlet for self-expression and plays a key role in developing vital creative skills for life beyond school.

Please keep an eye out for details of our end-of-year exhibition, which will take place after the May half term. If any past students wish to collect their coursework, please contact the school office to arrange a suitable time.

Our Year 11 student Zak, recently competed in the first Welsh triathlon of the season, finishing an impressive 2nd overall. A triathlon is a multi-discipline endurance event that includes swimming, cycling and running, testing an athlete’s stamina, speed and determination. Zak’s achievement is a fantastic example of dedication and resilience—well done, Zak!
