School Blog (10/11/23)

Welcome to the School Blog. Welcome to the School Blog

Today, we held our whole school Remembrance Assembly and were joined by several members of our Governing Body and Father Paul from Hope Church. The occasion was reflective and thought-provoking, and the respect shown by all members of the student population was impeccable. Although many of the key messages were challenging to hear, the profound content reminded us all to be thankful for the freedom we enjoy in Wales.

Diolch yn fawr to our Governing Body, Father Paul, and Lottie, Euan, Natasha, and Eleanor (all Sixth Form) for their composed, poignant readings, as well as to Miss Anna John for the moving rendition of the Last Post.

We are proud to announce the launch of the new Castell Alun Careers website. This platform serves as a starting point for both students and parents when considering future aspirations. It can be accessed via the school website under the ‘student’ or ‘parent’ tab, or directly through the following link: Castell Alun Careers Website. Additionally, the ‘employers’ section links to a Google Form where you can register your interest in supporting the school with the delivery of career and work-related experiences.

On Wednesday, 18th October, our Performing Arts’ Club showcased ‘The Last Resort’. Students from all years worked diligently both on and off stage to bring this show to life. The performance, set in a typical British seaside resort, was almost entirely student-led, offering them the chance to develop planning and preparation skills while honing their musical, technical, and acting talents. Diolch yn fawr to everyone involved for the entertainment and fun you provided. Please continue to showcase your skills in such fantastic ways!

As you know, we love celebrating our students’ successes, and this week we have several remarkable stories to share:

Sasha (Year 10) has been made captain of the Wales U15s Girls’ Football Team. She will lead the team against Norway this weekend. This is a tremendous honour and a significant achievement for any footballer. Many congratulations, Sasha—we are incredibly proud of you and look forward to watching your career develop!

Annabel (Sixth Form) has reached new heights in her golfing journey by signing with the University of South Florida. It is there she will study and play golf. The US College golf scene is a big deal, and we’re thrilled that Annabel is taking this significant step. Amazing job, Annabel!

Ffion (Year 10) will represent the Wales Netball U15 National Academy Squad this season, and Ruby (also Year 10) has earned a place in the equivalent U17 National Squad. Congratulations to both of you for reaching these impressive milestones!

William (Year 7) has just picked up a Silver Medal in the U11 category and a Bronze in the U13 Merthyr Junior Open for table tennis. Winning in your own age group is impressive, but taking a medal against older, more experienced players is quite something else! Ardderchog William!

Hatty (Year 7) played for Connah’s Quay Nomads U12s against Liverpool FCW, where the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Hatty scored a goal and assisted, highlighting her importance to the team. She also plays for the Flintshire Girls’ U13s side. Ella (Year 7) also deserves a great big shout-out for her performance as goalkeeper for Crewe Alexandra, where she won both of her games, conceding only one goal. Amazing job, Ella—da iawn!

Later today, Oscar (Year 10) will represent the school in a high-profile ski race in Llandudno. Oscar already counts several victories to his name, and we wish him all the very best for today’s race.

Moving from individuals to teams, well done to the Year 10 boys’ football team, who qualified for the next round of the Flintshire Cup before half term, despite the rain! The Year 9 boys’ team has also advanced to the next round of the Welsh Schools’ FA Cup. Fantastic news, lads! Moreover, the Year 10 boys also had great success on the rugby field, beating Mold Alun in the final of the RGC North East Wales Cup. There were many impressive performances, and these lads genuinely understand what it means to play your role in the team!

On Tuesday next week, CAFA will hold their AGM at 6.30 pm at Castell Alun. All interested parties are most welcome to attend and support the work of our wonderful school friends’ association.

We look forward to welcoming parents/carers of Year 13 students to the Parents’ Evening on Thursday, 16th November, starting at 4 pm. Year 13 students have been busy making appointments with their teachers. Then, on Friday, 17th November, we will join the rest of the country in supporting Children in Need.

Throughout the day, students will participate in quizzes, games, and a walk around the school (for Years 7 to 9). There will be with cakes and other goodies on sale at break and lunchtime as always! Please make contributions to improve the lives of children via the School Gateway.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
