School Blog (10/12/21)

Welcome to the School Blog. As we near the end of the term, we find ourselves in a position of uncertainty regarding virus developments and future implications. At the time of writing, no new announcements have been made by the Welsh Government, although we anticipate Mr. Drakeford will address this issue later today. Our students have been superb in adhering to mask-wearing rules around the building and in class, mindful of the need to look after each other and ourselves.

The school has embraced the Christmas spirit, but many wonderful learning experiences and exciting enrichment opportunities are still occurring. Last week, Year 7 attended the ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ panto at Theatre Clwyd and had a brilliant time. Many students commented on the joy of being back at a live event in such a fun atmosphere.

This week, Year 9 students participated in ‘Talk The Talk’ workshops, working with visiting trainers to develop their public speaking skills and confidence when addressing an audience. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and learned valuable skills for the future. Their English teachers were extremely proud of their progress, positivity, and determination. The Talk The Talk trainers were highly complimentary of the students, noting their excellent behaviour and attitude. Well done, Year 9!

In certain Year 7 classes, our links to France and our partner school are being further strengthened. Our students have been busy making Christmas cards and nameplates for our French friends, confirming that learning foreign languages can be great fun.

Congratulations to the Year 10 football team, who have progressed to the last 16 of the Welsh Schools FA Cup. The team beat Grango 2-1 away this week and enjoyed playing on the well-maintained Cefn Druids pitch. Let’s go all the way, boys!

Next week, the winning tutor group in each year group will be rewarded for accumulating the most praise points. These groups will be treated to a film and snacks or something similar, giving them time off lessons to recognise their massive effort this year.

Also next week, our Year 10 students will hold their Christmas market to enhance their skills profile. Festive treats will be available for all at nominal prices. On Friday, Performing Arts students from Years 10, 11, 12, and 13 will entertain Year 8 with a show called ‘Through the Decades.’ This performance will showcase a great deal of talent and will take place during the school day. Please check out the Events Calendar for more details.

One final reminder: the last day at Castell Alun for students and staff is still Tuesday, 21st December, as things stand.

Have a lovely weekend and see you back here soon for the next School Blog!
