School Blog (22/09/23)

Welcome to the School Blog We faced unpredictable weather this week, and the school certainly feels full! However, students’ behaviour remains excellent. This was further evidenced during our lockdown practice and an unanticipated fire alarm practice just days later. The fire alarm, triggered by a faulty sensor, should cause no concern.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Only Boys Aloud and, in particular, ex-Castell Alun student, singer, and comedian Tom Roberts for the fun and encouragement experienced by several boys at Castell Alun during Tuesday’s workshop. Some of our current students are members of Only Boys Aloud, and it’s clear that singing is becoming popular among lads once again.

This year’s Mold Food Festival was a great success despite the weather. Castell Alun students worked alongside celebrity chefs in the cooking theatre. Our students engaged with Graham Tinsley MBE, Executive Head Chef at Carden Park and Culinary Director for the Culinary Association of Wales. They also worked with Calum Smith, Sous Chef at Shrewsbury Private School, and Harry Paynter Roberts, Sous Chef at the Vines Restaurant, also located at Carden Park.

We strongly recommend befriending the students who participated in the Food Festival if you enjoy a scrumptious meal! Our students worked behind the scenes, preparing and serving dishes during the chefs’ demonstrations. Everyone involved enjoyed the weekend, and it provided an invaluable experience for those aspiring to pursue a career in hospitality and catering. We want to express a huge diolch to Ava (Year 11) and former student Nattaya, who left a lasting impression at the event.

Llongyfarchiadau to the Year 9 boys’ football team, who beat Glan Clwyd in the Welsh Cup this week and now progress to the next round. Great job also to our Year 8 netball team, who played in the Sisters in Sport National Schools Tournament and won 34-15 against Birkenhead School. This result allows us to advance to the next round.

Please remember that we love celebrating successes in all areas of life, so keep us informed of these significant moments in students’ lives. It’s worth mentioning again that we run a full programme of after-school activities, both sporting and non-sporting. Our extracurricular timetable is available via this link.

Year 7 students coped very well with their CATS tests this week, and Year 12 students will sit these standardised assessments on Monday and Tuesday next week. Please remind students that no preparation is necessary for this event.

We’re proud to announce that the new School Prospectus is now available on our school website, and you may well recognise some of the photographs! Next Thursday (28th September), we will hold our New Intake Open Evening from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. Although aimed primarily at current Year 6 students, everyone is welcome to attend.

The Headteacher and other specific staff will participate in a presentation at 6.30 pm, repeated at 7.15 pm to accommodate all families. The evening offers excellent opportunities to explore all areas of the school, meet relevant staff, and have your questions answered. If you cannot attend this open evening, a smaller open morning will be held the following day, Friday, 29th September. Please book a place in advance via the school office if you wish to attend this event and were unable to come along to the Open Evening. We look forward to seeing you all! Please park at the rear of the school as this event is usually very well attended.

We have a rising star of the stage in our midst—di iawn to Olivia (Year 10), who will perform at Storyhouse, Chester, in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ on Thursday, 28th, and Saturday, 30th September. But it doesn’t stop there! Olivia has made incredible progress in the performing arts and reached such a high standard that she will also take the stage at Her Majesty’s Royal Theatre in the West End, London, in November, in a performance organised by The Pauline Quirk Academy. After that, you can catch Olivia performing in a showcase at Llangollen Townhall in November.

Flintshire Council is running a new campaign titled ‘Green Dog Walkers’. The aim is to encourage dog walkers to ‘Take the Pledge’ to always clean up after their dogs. It’s essential to ensure everyone maintains a positive attitude toward health and wellbeing in this way.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
