School Blog (24/03/23)

Welcome to the School Blog. This week, we celebrated International Women’s Day with a Lower School Assembly on Wednesday. We were treated to a wonderful performance of We Are All Made of Stars by Lily (Year 7), who sang with great poise and confidence. Lily recently won 3rd place in the Oswestry Music Festival with this song. James (Year 9) also contributed with an extremely well-delivered, thought-provoking reading.

As we approach examination season, there is most certainly a deeply studious feel across the campus. Alongside examination preparations for our older students, we welcomed a large number of Year 6 students from some of our local primary schools for a Wellbeing Day on Wednesday. The purpose of this day is to introduce students who will join us in September, allowing them to get to know each other and the school in a way that builds confidence through activities such as dodgeball, art, and performing arts. We have received lots of positive feedback and look forward to welcoming students from other primary schools again in the near future.

Well done to everyone who participated in the A-Level and GCSE PE Moderation days this week. The anticipated high standards were met, and many students did themselves proud.

Diolch yn fawr to all parents and carers of Year 7 students who attended our Virtual Parents’ Evening last night. In the vast majority of cases, the IT worked very well. If you missed the opportunity to speak with specific teachers, please call the school, and we can arrange a call back. At the close of this academic year, we will again review the current parents’ evening model and discuss the merits of virtual and in-person parents’ evenings.

We wish the very best of luck to all students and staff participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Practice Expedition, which departs this afternoon. The level of challenge will be high, and the reward great, with vital life skills being actively developed. Fortunately, the weather looks reasonable, as no one wants a storm or torrential rain if it can be avoided!

On Monday and Tuesday evenings next week, our BTEC Performing Arts students will present their production of Return to the Forbidden Planet. Some of the students involved showcased their talents at our Lower School Assembly this week. Doors will open at 6 pm, with the show starting at 6.30 pm on both evenings. It will be great to see you there, and please remember that tickets cost £5. Tickets are available via School Gateway or at reception before 3 pm each day.

Please can we remind you once again about the CAFA Quiz Night next week on Thursday, 30th March. It promises to be a fun evening, and people of all ages are very welcome. Various refreshments, including hot dogs, will be on sale during the break. The doors will open at 6.30 pm. Please also remember that you can keep up to date with CAFA’s work through their newsletter.

Congratulations to Poppy (Sixth Form), who has been selected to represent Wales in the Under 18s Six Nations Rugby squad for the upcoming championships. What an amazing feat!

Finally, our school ski trip departs on Friday next week for Amade in Austria. There is great excitement among students, who will now have the chance to put into practice their newly-developed skills, honed in recent SkiFit lessons after school.

Thanks for reading, we hope you have a lovely weekend. See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
