School Blog (28/06/24)

It seems the lovely weather has left us for now, but we want to ensure that all students feel comfortable in school. As a result, we have relaxed the necessity for wearing jumpers at present. Stay comfortable, everyone!

The public examination period has now concluded, and we are pleased to report that students in Years 11 and 13 have no further papers to sit. Overall, we are very pleased with how nearly all of our students conducted themselves during this time. Some Year 10 students also had exams, and a few have learned valuable lessons before sitting their GCSEs next year.

Year 11 had their Leavers’ Prom yesterday in Chester, and what a night it was! Both staff and students had a wonderful time. The dance floor was full all night, and the food, free drinks, and ice creams made the evening extra special. The awards given out added a touch of humour to the event. Well done to everyone, and diolch for making it such a memorable occasion.

We also welcomed our new Year 7 students (starting in September) yesterday. They experienced a variety of lessons and learning activities, and it was fantastic to see new friendships forming. Getting to know each student better was a pleasure, and we’re confident they’ll thrive as they take on new challenges and become full-fledged Castell Alun students. Diolch yn fawr to the parents who attended our New Intake Induction Evening on Tuesday. We’re excited to work together to get the best for our students.

Thursday was a busy day at school! In the afternoon, our talented Key Stage 3 students performed an enchanting extract from Matilda Junior for a primary school audience. The performance was full of lively songs and heartfelt moments, and the young cast did an incredible job showcasing their acting, singing, and dancing talents. Don’t miss the full production on Wednesday, July 10th, and Thursday, July 11th—tickets are on sale now via TicketSource. Please come and support our students as they bring this beloved story to life on stage!

We’re also excited to invite you to our GCSE, AS, and A Level Art Exhibition on Thursday, 4th July, in the Y Celtec building (Art Department—Rooms 2.1 & 2.2) from 4-6 PM. Admission is free, and while the pieces cannot be photographed, we’re sure you’ll be amazed by the quality of our students’ work.

In other news, some of our Year 8 students had the fantastic opportunity to attend the Big Bang Science Fair at the NEC in Birmingham. The students engaged with a variety of stalls, from generating electricity to virtual reality experiences and learning about UV radiation. They even tried their hand at being BBC news presenters! Isaac (Year 8) won a Kindle for his participation in one of the events. Everyone had a great time, and it was a fantastic day of putting scientific knowledge to the test.

On Monday, 13 Year 8 students attended an event at Bangor University, where they were trained as Pupil Language Ambassadors for Routes into Languages Cymru. They tested out language software, learned British Sign Language, and even tried their hand at Chinese. Bangor University staff were impressed with their language skills. The students have now been tasked with raising the profile of Modern Languages at school. Well done to everyone involved—merci / danke!

In sporting news, a big well done to our Year 10 girls, who won the Flintshire Rounders Tournament. Congratulations also to Ruby (Year 12), who has made the long squad for the Wales Rugby U21 World Youth Cup Qualifiers. Earlier this week, our U14 cricket team played a fantastic fixture against Alun School, scoring 99 runs. Although we were narrowly beaten, it was a great display of skill from both teams.

Our school Sports Day is scheduled for Friday, 12th July, and we’re all eager to see if any long-standing records will be broken this year. Let’s hope for the return of better weather!

With only three weeks to go, there’s still plenty to do. Diolch to everyone for all your support!
