School Blog (28/04/23)

Welcome to the School Blog. As April draws to a close, our foreign language classes have nearly all completed their oral assessments. We would like to congratulate everyone on their efforts and performances in what can be a nerve-racking environment. Now, it’s ‘full steam ahead’ into the public examination season, and we encourage students to make the most of the different examination preparation sessions available at Castell Alun.

Yesterday, a large number of Year 6 pupils participated in a Wellbeing Transition Day at school. Our new intake students appeared to settle in very well, engaging in various fun activities and establishing the beginnings of new friendships. One Year 6 student commented, “I just can’t wait until September!”

Today, we have two visitors in school who are taking on the role of ‘Dragons’ in our Dragons’ Den event, grilling a large number of Year 12 students on their Welsh Baccalaureate Enterprise projects. We extend our grateful thanks to Deb Owen and Simon Checketts, Regional Managers at Lloyds Bank, for the challenge and guidance they are providing to so many of our young entrepreneurs.

This week, we welcomed two new members of staff to our school: Mrs. Debra Clayton (Subject Leader for Biology) and Miss Pip Lantos (Rugby Hwb Officer). We look forward to their contributions and the roles they will play in delivering high-quality education and learning to our students.

Many of you will have noticed the new fences surrounding our inner campus. These have been funded through a specific grant, and although we might prefer they were unnecessary, we are grateful for the extra protection they provide for our students during the school day. Safeguarding our students is always our highest priority.

Well done to Lucy and Macy (both Year 7), who recently played for Deeside Netball Club under 12s in the Welsh National Regional qualifiers. The girls won all of their games, finishing first in their group, which means the team now progresses to the finals in Pembrokeshire in May. Pob lwc, girls!

On a musical note, congratulations to Joseph (Year 7) having recently passed his ABRSM Grade 3 Piano with a merit. Congratulations also to Lily (also Year 7), who achieved a distinction in her ABRSM Grade 3 Musical Theatre exam.

Year 12 student, Iwan, has an exciting few weeks ahead! As a member of the academy of Only Boys Aloud, Iwan has been selected to sing in a massed choir of 300 people from across the UK at the King’s Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle on 7th May. This incredible opportunity will see him share the stage with acts such as Lionel Richie, Take That, and Andrea Bocelli! Have a fantastic time, Iwan—soak it all in, and we look forward to hearing about your experience! On Friday, 5th May, we will hold a Coronation Main School Assembly, with participants from all year groups.

Please remember that Monday, 1st May, and Monday, 8th May, are both Bank Holidays. Therefore, school will only be open from Tuesday to Friday for the next two calendar weeks.

One further advance notice: There will be no study buses running after school on Thursday, 11th May. This is due to our Year 8 Parents’ Evening on this date.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
