Welcome back!
Welcome to the Castell Alun High School Blog.
As we draw a close on our first week back after the October half term, we’d like to reflect on what has already been a memorable and meaningful start to this half term.
This week, our school community gathered for a powerful Remembrance Assembly. Together, we paid tribute to those who served and sacrificed in times of conflict. Students listened thoughtfully, reminded of the importance of resilience, compassion, and unity—values we uphold each day.
In classrooms, extra curricular clubs, and activities, it’s been wonderful to see everyone diving back into learning with renewed energy. From tackling new challenges in lessons to gearing up for exciting events, the week has been filled with creativity, focus, and positive momentum.
Commemorating Remembrance Day
This week, we concluded with a moving whole-school assembly dedicated to Remembrance Day. Miss Edwards, our Assistant Head and Director of Sixth Form, led the assembly. She was joined by Miss Robinson, the Assistant Director of Sixth Form. The special gathering provided a powerful moment to honour the importance of remembrance and the enduring symbol of the poppy.
During the assembly, Sibella, Elin, Daniel, Faith, and Georgia delivered impactful readings, inspiring everyone to reflect on past sacrifices. Next, they recited John McCrae’s powerful poem, In Flanders Fields, which vividly expressed the day’s deep reverence and reflection.
The assembly was enriched with musical performances, adding a deeply emotional layer to the ceremony. Miss Anna John performed The Last Post, a solemn and moving tribute traditionally played on Remembrance Day. Additionally, Freya, Seren, Hayden, and Mr. Searson performed Hey Jude, a song that resonated beautifully with the assembly’s reflective tone.
The event served as a meaningful reminder of the sacrifices made for our freedom and the importance of unity and remembrance. We are also most grateful that so many of our governors were able to join us.
Poppy Display
This week, our lower school students explored the significance of the poppy in art lessons. They created individual poppies for a collective piece honouring those who served and sacrificed in times of conflict. This display captures each student’s unique interpretation of remembrance and honour, forming a vibrant tribute to peace and resilience. It’s a powerful reminder of how we unite in respect and reflection. The students’ thoughtful work stands as a testament to their creativity, empathy, and understanding of history, inviting everyone to pause and remember. The pieces are currently on display in our Reception Area.
Year 13 Parents’ Evening
This week, we held a successful Year 13 Parents’ Evening. It provided an invaluable opportunity for parents and guardians to meet with teachers and discuss their child’s progress. This is especially important as they approach the final stages of their studies. It was a chance for everyone to reflect on achievements so far and look ahead to the upcoming exams and plans for their future pathways. We appreciate the support and engagement of our Year 13 families. We look forward to helping students reach their full potential in these crucial final months of their school journey.
Top of the Bench Success
On Tuesday, 4 students were selected to take part in the Royal Society of Chemistry ‘Top of the Bench’ competition. This heat took place in Liverpool University’s Central Teaching Hub. It was attended by 20 schools from the North West region. William and Ben in Year 9, Lauren in Year 10 and Hannah Year 11, created a poster on the real-life reactivity series. They also performed a practical test in the university laboratories and also undertook a challenging written test. The students competed incredibly well against stiff competition. Although unable to beat Hulme Grammar School to the final, they did achieve 3rd place for their poster!
Royal Navy Workshop
This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Royal Navy for an engaging STEM workshop that brought science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to life in a dynamic way, with a strong focus on teamwork.
On Thursday, students gathered for a presentation from the Royal Navy, where they learned about real-world applications of STEM skills and the importance of collaboration. The highlight of the day was a hands-on rocket-building workshop, where students worked in teams to design and construct rockets from scratch. The session concluded with a thrilling competition, where teams tested their rockets to see whose design would soar the highest. The activity not only sparked creativity and problem-solving but also reinforced team-building skills in a fun, interactive environment.
We’d like to extend a special thanks to History teacher, Miss Naomi Huxley, a member of the Royal Navy, who facilitated the day and helped make this experience possible. The workshop was a fantastic opportunity for students to apply STEM concepts in a practical setting and gain valuable insights from industry professionals. It was a memorable day that left students feeling inspired and excited about the potential of STEM!
Seren Students Cambridge Visit
Seren students in Year 12 recently embarked on an inspiring trip to Cambridge. They had the opportunity to explore one of the world’s most prestigious universities. During their visit, they engaged in guided tours of the historic colleges, participated in informative workshops, and heard from current students about academic life and extracurricular opportunities. This experience not only broadened their understanding of higher education but also ignited their aspirations for their future studies.
Students Engage with Industry Experts
Our Business and Economics students welcomed guest speaker Mike Beadle, an alumnus of Castell Alun High School and current investment banker at Deutsche Numis. During his visit, Mike shared insights into his role in the investment banking sector, providing students with a first hand look at the industry. The session included interactive activities that encouraged participation and critical thinking, offering students food for thought about potential career paths in finance.
A select group of Economics students from Year 12 and 13 also participated in an engaging Economic Conference at Bangor University, where they had the chance to hear from prominent economists from the Welsh Government. The event featured insightful talks on current economic issues and policies, enhancing the students’ understanding of real-world economics. In addition to the discussions, they enjoyed interactive activities, including the international trade game, which allowed them to apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting. This enriching experience not only deepened their knowledge but also inspired their passion for the subject.
Celebrating Welsh Culture
During the half-term break, some of our wonderfully talented students brought fresh vibrancy to the Welsh corridor with a new mural, capturing the beauty and spirit of Cymru’s iconic landmarks. This breathtaking artwork takes viewers on a visual journey through Wales, highlighting its most scenic and historically significant locations.
The project was led by Natasha, a Year 13 student studying both Welsh and Art at A-level. As the co-chair of Cyngor Cymraeg (our Welsh Council), Natasha took the initiative to design and direct the mural project. After presenting her concept to the council, other members contributed their ideas, helping shape a mural that truly represents the pride we feel for Welsh heritage and language.
Natasha received invaluable support from Persephone, a dedicated Year 10 student who worked closely with her on the mural. We’d also like to extend a big diolch yn fawr to Ivy in Year 12, as well as Ezra and Jennifer in Year 10, for their hard work and creativity.
It’s inspiring to see our students not only embrace but also actively promote bilingualism here at Castell Alun. The mural stands as a testament to their dedication and pride in Welsh culture—diolch pawb!
An Unforgettable Paris Adventure
Here’s a snapshot of two of our students, Niamh (Year 8) and Grace (Year 7), in front of the iconic Eiffel Tower!
Niamh and Grace recently travelled to Paris as part of an exciting Girlguiding trip with units from across Wrexham and Flintshire. Their adventure was packed with memorable experiences, including a trip up the Eiffel Tower, a scenic river cruise along the Seine; and a magical day at Disneyland Paris. A special highlight of the trip was when Grace made her Guide Promise at Disneyland—a truly unforgettable moment!
We’re thrilled to see our students representing our school in such inspiring activities and bringing back wonderful stories from their travels.
Sporting News
It was a tough but thrilling game for our Year 8 football team as they played against Connahs Quay High School in an exciting match. The game was intense, with both teams giving their all, and it came down to the final moments. Unfortunately, the away side scored a last-minute winner, clinching a 5-4 victory.
While it was a loss for our team, they played with great determination and skill throughout the match. We’re incredibly proud of their effort and sportsmanship. Best of luck to Connahs Quay in the next round, and we look forward to our team’s next challenge! Keep up the great work, Year 8!
Our Year 7 girls had a brilliant morning of rugby at Wrexham RFU, where they showcased incredible resilience and teamwork. For many of the girls, it was their first experience with rugby, but they embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. It was fantastic to see them stepping out of their comfort zones and giving their best on the field.
A special mention goes to our rugby leaders, who played a vital role in guiding and supporting the girls throughout the session. They led various activities designed to build confidence, teaching skills, and encouraging everyone to push themselves. The event was a great success, and we look forward to seeing how the girls continue to develop their rugby skills in the future! Well done to everyone involved!
Congratulations to Amelia, Bethan, Olivia, Phoebe, Idele, and Caitlin. They have recently returned from an incredible experience at a swimming camp in Spain with their club! The girls spent an intensive week training, refining their techniques, and pushing their limits in a high-performance environment.
The camp provided not only world-class coaching but also the opportunity to bond as a team, experience Spanish culture, and enjoy the sunshine between sessions. We’re so proud of their dedication and commitment to their sport. We look forward to seeing how this experience will propel them forward in their swimming journeys. Well done, girls!
