School Blog (07/05/21)

Welcome to the School Blog. We’ve had four seasons in one week since my last update. I appreciate how well-behaved students have been when it’s not possible to spend time outside at break or lunch. We all hope summer is just around the corner.

With great sadness, I inform you of the passing of Miss Mair Morgan, former Subject Leader of Religious Studies. Mair served the school faithfully for 33 years and retired in 2018. Colleagues miss her greatly and remember her sense of fun. She will always remain a cherished member of our school family.

One of the most pleasant parts of my role is congratulating students when they show marked improvement or consistently give their best. Today, I spent time with several Year 10 students who have shown significant progress in their lessons and learning ethic. Long may these sessions continue!

We are very appreciative of Ardagh Limited, who have donated tools for each student on the City & Guilds Engineering course. This generous support has enabled students to participate in practical work, which was previously hindered by Covid-19 restrictions. Our close working relationship with Ardagh Limited continues to engage students in real-world learning. With more exciting projects in the pipeline, it is very much ‘watch this space!’.

Our Castell Alun Friends Association (CAFA) has devised a lovely method for raising money: a Cutest/Funniest Pet Photo Competition. Open to all students, the competition runs via Google Classroom. Students are asked to upload their best pet picture and follow a link to enter for £1. A guest panel will judge all entries and award prizes in a couple of weeks.

Starting Monday, 10th May, certain extra-curricular sporting activities will be available to Year 7 and 8 students. All students know how to sign up using Google Forms. We are excited to restart our extra-curricular programme, but it is important that all students sign up in advance.

BT has announced the launch of a new broadband tariff – BT Home Essentials – starting in June. This improved social tariff provides an average of 36 Mbps download speed and 700 minutes of calls for £15 a month, half the price of a standard BT fibre and calls package. Alternatively, eligible customers can opt for average speeds of 67 Mbps and unlimited calls for £20 per month. This may assist some families.

With just three weeks until our school Assessment Point 2, many students in Years 11, 12, and 13 are in the final stages of their assessments. These students should be very proud of their efforts. We acknowledge this is an intense time, and staff speak highly of their engagement and achievement. Remember, we are always here to support your child if they feel anxious or have pressing concerns.

Thank you very much for your ongoing support. Have a nice weekend.
