School Blog (08/10/21)

Welcome to the School Blog. We continue to run the school amidst renovation work, and we remain thankful for the mature and responsible behaviour of virtually all our students during these times.

Thank you for the feedback you have provided over recent weeks on various matters, including the new toilet blocks. We appreciate all comments and endeavour to respond thoughtfully to all observations. Our Student Council is now busy discussing the new bathrooms, and we will keep you informed of any further developments.

Today, our Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award cohort departs for their final expedition in the Clwydian Range. We hope everyone has a great time and further develops their skills in what appears to be a dry and relatively warm environment. Mr. Jack Evans will accompany this trip, and we are keen to continue promoting the great benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh programme to all students in Years 10, 11, 12, and 13.

Thank you for the information on student successes. We have so much to be proud of and grateful for!

Daniel’s Taekwondo Achievement

Daniel, in Year 7, is a black belt in Taekwondo. Incredibly, he achieved this at the age of 8, making him one of the youngest in the country to do so. Daniel now seeks to follow in his brother Luke’s (Year 11) footsteps and pursue 2nd Dan status. However, as a junior, he will be required to wait three years for this. Brilliant job, Daniel – well done!

Bethan’s Football Success

In Year 8, congratulations to Bethan, who has once again secured a place on the Flintshire Schools Girls’ Football team for the third consecutive year.

More Football Achievements

Matilda (Year 9) has been selected for the Flintshire U15 Football Squad. Additionally, Millie (Year 9) finished third overall in the British Women’s Motocross Championship (Youth 85 class). Outstanding achievements, girls – very impressive!

Freya’s Ju-Jitsu Black Belt

It’s fantastic how many of our young ladies are developing self-defence expertise. Congratulations to Freya (Year 10), who achieved her black belt in Ju-Jitsu this week!

Rugby Taster Event

Girls representing Years 8, 9, and 10 attended a Welsh Rugby taster event this week. The session was hosted by Welsh Women’s International Rugby Player, Rachel Taylor, and our girls got stuck in, having a fantastic time. They are now eager to develop their rugby skills further and will pursue training sessions in local clubs. That’s brilliant news, girls.

You’ve probably heard of TED talks. We’re thrilled to announce that four Castell Alun students – Bella and Abbie (Year 8), Louisa (Year 11), and Jessica (Year 12) – will present at a TED event at Theatr Clwyd. TED events earn high acclaim in public speaking, and the topic is climate change. This event encourages young people to share impactful messages on tackling climate change across North Wales. We wish them every success!

TED collaborates with several organizations, including Natural Resources Wales, RENEW Wales, and Glyndwr University, to host live TEDx talks. This collaboration allows children and young people to join the TEDx global countdown event linked to COP.

A-Level Drama, Production, and Dance students went to Theatre Clwyd this week to watch ‘Miss Julie’ and Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Dial M for Murder’. The students enjoyed it very much, and it was wonderful to be back at the theatre after such a long time. At Castell Alun, we seek out the most enriching learning experiences for our students, and this applies not only to drama but also to all other areas of school life.

Let’s hope the Welsh Men’s Football Team are triumphant in their World Cup qualifier this evening. Have a nice weekend, everyone – see you for the next School Blog!
