School Blog (11/04/25)

As the final week of the Spring term begins, we look ahead to a well-deserved Easter break. Now is the perfect time to reflect on a truly uplifting and rewarding few months at Castell Alun. Our school community has consistently demonstrated our core values of Respect, Determination and Honesty in all aspects of school life.

Students, staff, and families have come together to build a positive, supportive environment we’re incredibly proud of.
Whether learning in classrooms, joining extra-curricular activities, or showing everyday kindness, their efforts shine brightly.

Today we held our Easter Main Assembly. We were encouraged to reflect upon the meaning of this Christian festival. The time together as a whole-school was poignant and most thought-provoking. We are extremely grateful to Immy, Eric and Sara 9all of year 8) for leading us with their readings. Diolch yn fawr!

Our Headteacher also shared a powerful reminder: “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” – do the little things. This message from St David highlights how even the smallest actions can make the biggest difference.

We hope you enjoy this week’s Blog and join us in celebrating all the fantastic things happening across our school.

The Gardening Club at Castell Alun has been busy transforming our school grounds into a greener, more sustainable space. A new school orchard with five fruit trees now welcomes visitors at the front entrance. Also, habitat boxes for insects, birds and hedgehogs have been installed to support local wildlife.

At the back of the school, a wildflower ‘no mow’ zone has been created using specialist turf to encourage pollinators. In the quad, students have planted a variety of produce including rhubarb, lettuce, radishes, berries, peas, beans and tomatoes. A new compost area has also been set up for staff and students to contribute food waste. This is all in an effort to support our eco-friendly goals.

The club’s fantastic work is helping to create a more vibrant and environmentally conscious school for everyone.

We are proud to announce that Castell Alun High School has been selected to join a new STEM Partnership with Airbus Broughton, alongside 12 other schools across North Wales and Chester. This exciting initiative, launched during National Apprenticeship Week, aims to inspire the next generation of engineers and aerospace professionals by connecting students with industry experts. Through workshops, mentoring and exclusive insights into Airbus’ wing production facility, our students will have the opportunity to explore real-world STEM careers and build essential skills for the future.

Each participating school, including Castell Alun, will be assigned a dedicated Airbus sponsor to support engagement and facilitate tailored STEM activities. The partnership also places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, encouraging students from all backgrounds—especially underrepresented groups—to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Airbus STEM Ambassadors will share their experiences and provide ongoing guidance, helping to raise aspirations and broaden horizons. We are excited about the incredible experiences this collaboration will bring. We look forward to working closely with Airbus to empower our students and build a strong, local pipeline of future STEM professionals.

On Thursday, we proudly welcomed another group of students from our partner primary schools for our Wellbeing Transition Event.
The day buzzed with excitement as students explored a wide range of fun, hands-on activities.

These sessions helped them feel at ease and start building connections with their future school. Notably, the school canteen food became an instant favourite—it was a clear highlight of the day! In addition to the tasty treats, students took part in workshops across Art, Music, PE, and Performing Arts. As a result, they got a lively taste of the exciting subjects they’ll soon study at Castell Alun.

Meanwhile, our teachers delivered engaging, high-energy sessions that truly brought each subject to life. Thanks to their effort and enthusiasm, the day left students smiling and more confident about their transition. Looking ahead, we can’t wait to welcome our new starters again.
Together, we’ll keep the transition journey fun and meaningful as they prepare for their next chapter at Castell Alun!

On Wednesday 9th April, our Anti-Racism Ambassadors proudly represented Castell Alun at a special event.
Show Racism the Red Card Cymru organised the day to celebrate the incredible work of student-led anti-racism groups across North East Wales.

The event powerfully reminded everyone how young people lead the way in building inclusive, respectful school communities. At the event, five Year 9 students from Castell Alun delivered a confident and inspiring presentation. They highlighted six months of hard work raising awareness, educating peers, and promoting anti-racist values throughout the school.

They also revealed exciting plans for future initiatives, sparking hope and inspiration among attendees. Each student earned a certificate and the prestigious ‘Leaders of Now’ award. The judging panel recognised their outstanding commitment and bold leadership. We feel incredibly proud of their passion, courage, and the positive change they continue to drive at Castell Alun.

Well done to everyone involved—you lead by example and truly make a difference!

At lunchtime today, the Hall was buzzing as Mr Gadie and our amazing Sixth Form hosted a brilliant Bonkers Bingo event. The event was held to raise funds for students within our school community. It was a fantastic opportunity for students and staff to come together for a good cause. The event featured fun prizes, lots of excitement and a great atmosphere all round. We’re incredibly proud of the Sixth Form for organising such an engaging and entertaining fundraiser. We also say a big thank you to everyone who came along and supported the event!

You can see our full range of upcoming events by heading over to our Events Calendar page.

As the vibrant Spring term ends, the Castell Alun community thrives with creativity, collaboration, and purpose. Throughout the term, students tackled environmental projects, led with passion, and formed exciting partnerships. They also raised funds with joy and enthusiasm, showing energy and drive every step of the way.

We now wish all our families a restful and joyful Easter break. Let’s return refreshed, recharged, and ready for a brilliant summer term!
