Half Term Reflections
Welcome to the School Blog and at last, it’s half term! This past week’s Wellbeing Week at Castell Alun has been a fantastic chance for students to catch up and reflect on their learning. It’s great to hear that students found the week beneficial, giving them a chance to recharge before the next busy term. We’re taking on board feedback about avoiding overload, especially for Year 7, and will strive to keep tasks stimulating while being mindful of wellbeing.
Staff Changes
We’ll be saying goodbye to our Year 9 Student Development Manager, Miss Beth Jones, at Easter. Her departure will be a great loss, but we’re excited to welcome Mrs Lisa Allen into the role. With her decade of experience at Castell Alun, Mrs Allen will bring a wealth of knowledge to the position and will undoubtedly make a positive impact. Year 9 students can look forward to her guidance in the next term.
Options and Choices
For Year 9 and 11 students considering their options for the next academic year, the Virtual Sixth Form Open Evening and the Year 9 Programme of Study Booklet are available on the school website. These resources, along with the Year 9 Parents’ Evening on 25th February, will help students and parents navigate the options process. It’s important to use these resources to make informed decisions, and our subject staff are ready to answer any questions.
Virtual Hockey Competition
The Welsh National Hockey Cup has gone virtual this year. Castell Alun’s team won their first-round match and is now competing against Welshpool High. Therefore, the team needs as many Twitter votes as possible by 14th February to advance. Your support through voting could help them progress further in the competition. Vote here.
Wellbeing in Psychology
Miss Nicole Cooke’s A Level Psychology class has been engaging in a series of wellbeing activities, which tie into their studies and this week’s theme. Activities include:
- Day 1: Find and share 2 inspirational quotes.
- Day 2: Complete a random act of kindness.
- Day 3: Learn 5 new words in a different language.
- Day 4: Go for a walk and photograph the strangest thing you find (within reason).
Year 8 History
Year 8 students studying the reign of Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada have been tasked with creating infographic posters to showcase their learning. The History Department was thrilled with the outstanding work produced, demonstrating that even remote learning doesn’t hinder creativity and effort. Well done to all Year 8 students!
Looking Ahead
As we head into the break, I hope students, parents, and staff can find some time to relax and recharge. The juggling act of daily life has been particularly challenging, and taking time for an ‘oasis moment’ can make a significant difference.
In closing, remember Gloria Steinem’s words: “Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.” Let’s hold on to the hope of better times ahead and continue to support each other through these times.
Have a restful half term, everyone!
