School Blog (13/10/23)

Welcome to the School Blog. We now have just two weeks left of this half term, and student progress and behaviour in school are commendable.

This week, we held an upper school assembly to celebrate Black History Month. Diolch yn fawr to Logan, Louise, and Olivia from Year 10 for their excellent readings, which included sections in Welsh. We reflected on our heritage as a country and discussed how we can personally take responsibility for promoting change whenever we encounter prejudice and discrimination.

Additionally, we are pleased to report that the generous groceries provided by our Year 7 students during the recent Harvest assembly have been delivered to our local food bank and were gratefully received. Diolch once again to all families for their contributions, and a special thanks to Ella and Henry, who represented Castell Alun when delivering the food.

You may recall that we held our New Intake Open Evening at the end of September. We were astounded by the level of interest from pupils in local primary schools, as well as many from further afield. The evening was a great success, and we are now delighted to announce that the winner of the sticker-collection game is Lottoria (Year 6). Di iawn Lottoria! It was lovely to meet you, and we hope to see you again very soon. Your Amazon voucher will be posted to you next week.

Last night, CAFA held a bingo evening in the school hall, which was well attended by people of all ages. Miss Lloyd-Jones was the guest caller, and she, along with the entire CAFA team, ensured that everyone had a fantastic time. We are immensely grateful to the wonderful people in CAFA for their tireless efforts to assist the school in funding items that we wouldn’t normally be able to afford. Diolch!

Today, we’re celebrating Shwmae Sumae—Hello Hello Day. Students enjoyed participating in an online live quiz during registration. Our Year 12 Welsh students are running a tuck shop (siop fferins) at lunchtime, where anyone hoping to make a purchase must siarad Cymraeg. Of course, Mr. Urdd is in school, and Welsh language games and activities are taking place across the entire school all day.

On 26th September, students celebrated European Day of Languages. Key Stage 3 students were invited to bake European-themed cakes and desserts to raise money for the MFL Department and Macmillan Cancer Support. Staff were amazed by the array of bakes students created, which included many French, German, and Spanish treats. The cake sale, run by GCSE French, German, and Spanish students, took place over two breaktimes. Everyone was encouraged to use their language skills to order the cakes of their choice. In total, we raised £30 and had great fun doing it! Merci à tous! Vielen Dank! Muchas gracias!

We wish the very best to our Silver Duke of Edinburgh students for their expedition this weekend. Although we’ve experienced heavy rain recently, the forecast predicts an improvement, and we’re confident that you’ll rise to the challenges the expedition will undoubtedly present! We’re strong believers in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and genuinely feel that this type of activity teaches our students invaluable skills beyond what they can practise during a standard school day.

Congratulations to our Year 7 and 8 boys’ football teams. They have qualified for the Flintshire finals after two close games with Hawarden High School and St. David’s. Additionally, our Year 10 Netball Girls’ team reached the semi-final of the regional cup. They narrowly lost to Sir Huw Owen 7-10. It’s great to see that the bad weather doesn’t deter our students from enjoying their sport!

We’re looking forward to Thursday next week, when we will hold a face-to-face Parents’ Evening for families of students in Year 11. Diolch to all who have used the online booking system to secure your appointments. If you experience any difficulties with this system, please contact the school immediately. This is an essential evening for all, as it provides the perfect opportunity to receive feedback on current levels of progress and work ethic, and it also allows parents to discuss further ways to support students as we move into the final stage of their GCSE or equivalent courses. Please do book in as soon as possible.

It’s quarter-final weekend for our country, and we wish the rugby team pob lwc!

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
