Despite the cold weather this week, it has been encouraging to see students settling back into their routines with a positive and focused attitude. Classrooms across the school have remained calm and purposeful, with students engaging well in their learning and showing real resilience.

From thoughtful discussions in lessons to consistent effort in independent work, students have continued to demonstrate our school values through commitment and enthusiasm. As we move further into the term, we look forward to building on this strong start and supporting all learners to make the most of every opportunity.

On dydd Llun and dydd Mawrth, a group of 27 A-level Cymraeg students from Castell Alun attended a two-day course at Gwersyll yr Urdd, Glan Llyn near Y Bala, organised by the school’s Welsh department. Students took part in sessions focused on literature, language and the history of Cymraeg.

In addition, Glan Llyn staff led practical activities, including archery and high-ropes. A highlight of the visit was a trip to Llyn Trywerin to visit Capel Coffa Capel Celyn and learn about the flooding of the Trywerin Valley.

Afterwards, students spent time in Y Bala, where they practised speaking Cymraeg in local shops and cafés. Overall, the experience proved both educational and memorable for everyone involved.

It was a brilliant experience, and both staff and students had an amazing time, particularly while playing Traitors yn Gymraeg. Since returning, staff have commented on the growth in students’ confidence and their continued progress with the language.

Student voice plays a vital role in shaping teaching and learning at our school. This term, we gathered feedback from Year 8 and Year 9 students about their learning experiences in lessons.

Their responses focused on key teaching and learning priorities, including clear success criteria, effective questioning, responsive teaching, inclusive challenge, impactful feedback and the use of Cymraeg. Importantly, listening to students helps us understand what is working well and where improvements can be made.

Furthermore, student voice ensures that learning approaches support confidence, challenge and engagement for all learners. We value this feedback because it enables reflection, strengthens practice and supports the continued development of lessons that meet every learner’s needs.

Wrexham Library is hosting a Welsh language course for parents and carers who wish to learn Cymraeg alongside their young children. The sessions will run every Wednesday from 10:00am to 11:00am, between 21st January and 18th March.

At our school, we place strong importance on promoting the Welsh language and supporting families to build confidence in using Cymraeg from an early age. Opportunities like this help strengthen Welsh culture and encourage bilingualism across the community.

If you are interested in taking part or would like further information, please contact Clwb Cwtsh at clwbcwtsh@meithrin.cymru.

Each Friday, photographs of unclaimed items will be taken and shared on the school Blog for parents, and on Google Classroom for students. Students should speak to their group tutors to arrange collection during registration or at another suitable time.

At the end of each half term, any remaining unclaimed items will be donated to charity. Consequently, we hope this system will help students reunite with their belongings more quickly and easily.
