School Blog (17/05/24)

Welcome to the School Blog. Yesterday, it was lovely to see so many parents and carers of Year 7 students at our Parents’ Evening. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a talented and hard-working group of students who will undoubtedly continue to grow and enrich our school community in the coming years. Diolch yn fawr to everyone who attended this event.

This week, we have several exciting visits and success stories to share. A group of Year 8 students studying French attended a creative workshop with a French graphic artist at Bangor University. The workshop focused on how the popular ‘Bande Dessinée’ comic books in France raise awareness about climate change. Students were fascinated by the use of these comics to highlight environmental issues and even created their own illustrated storyboards. Our students represented Castell Alun brilliantly, showing creativity and a willingness to use their French language skills in new ways. Merci bien to everyone involved!

We were also fortunate to host an expert trainer from Talk The Talk on Wednesday, 1st May, who worked with our Year 9 SEREN students. The ‘Talk About Communication Plus’ workshop offered an engaging masterclass that developed speaking, listening, and debating skills. Throughout the day, students grew in confidence, delivering structured group presentations. It was inspiring to see our students refine their oracy skills in such a dynamic learning environment.

A few days ago, members of our Student Council—Henry and Ella from Year 7, Leo and Tulani from Year 8, and Tomos from Year 9—visited County Hall in Mold. They received a guided tour of the Council Chambers, gaining insight into local government operations. The Chair of the Council, Councillor Gladys Healey, who also serves as one of our school governors, welcomed them. A

fter learning about the Chair’s role, students toured meeting rooms and the Council Chamber. They even shared their thoughts on whether the school summer holidays should be shortened, sparking interesting discussions. We extend our thanks to Councillor Healey for her time and valuable insights.

Well done to Aerona, Olivia, Louis, Ben, Dylan, and Ael, who performed brilliantly at a charity concert in Hope Church last weekend, supporting the BT Big Band. The performance standards were high, and we are always proud of our students who generously give their time to participate in such events.

Special congratulations go to Sam (Year 7), whose Cheshire Phoenix U12 Basketball Team won the National Regional Conference Playoffs at the Manchester Basketball Centre. We are incredibly proud of Sam, who is making quite a name for himself on the basketball court. Llongyfarchiadau, Sam!

Also, well done to Oscar (Year 10), who recently competed in the Schools’ Skiing Competition in Llandudno. Oscar’s strong performance earned him fourth place, and with another race just days away, we wish him continued success. Additionally, Ffion (Year 10) maintained her high standards on the football field, earning another cap for her country last weekend. We’re excited to follow your career, Ffion, and expect great things!

This week, we want to give a special mention to Jan, an ex-student currently studying German and Philosophy. Jan recently entered an essay competition for AUT Magazine and has been selected as one of the 18 finalists from across the UK. As a result, Jan will attend the Austrian Culture Forum in London.

As mentioned in last week’s School Blog, our Year 13 Leaving Ceremony will take place on Friday, 24th May, at 2:15 pm. We ask all guests to be seated by 2 pm, and since the event lasts around two hours, Year 13 students will need alternative transport arrangements. We are honoured to have our previous Head of Sixth, Mr. Kevin Davies, as the guest speaker. Year 13 students will celebrate their achievements with a meal at Double Tree Hilton Chester that evening.

After the half-term break, we will hold our Year 8 Parents’ Evening on Thursday, 6th June, from 4 pm. Students will begin booking appointments next week, and a letter will be sent to parents and carers with further details.

Public examinations are now in full swing and will continue for approximately four more weeks. We are always here to support our students, so please reach out if you need to talk. We wish everyone the very best in their exams. Finally, Year 12 will return from study leave on Monday, 3rd June.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
