WJEC Frustrations
It’s great to have our Year 12 students back with us. Everybody has come through the examination period, although some have expressed frustrations about certain papers. We have already passed these frustrations onto the WJEC. Further feedback will be provided to the board as necessary on an individual and whole school level.
Continued Academic Efforts
The examination period continues for another week. Nevertheless, academic rigour never ceases in the classroom for Years 7 to 10. Take a moment to admire the outstanding work our DT students have produced in their new workshops over recent weeks. You can find these creations on the CAHS Design & Technology Twitter account.
Exciting Musical Opportunities
The RWCMD Jazz Band and Dionne Bennett will perform at Theatr Clwyd later this month. On Thursday, 23rd June, they will visit us to perform a concert for Year 8 students and the Year 10 GCSE Music class. We are excited about this opportunity and hope it will inspire our younger musicians to participate in musical ensembles soon.
Sporting Achievements
As promised in our previous School Blog, we have several sporting stories to share.
Really well done to Sam (Year 7), who represented Wales in a bowls competition against Staffordshire in Wolverhampton last week. Sam plays for the Cunliffe team and has only been bowling for a year and a half. Inspired by his dad, there is now doubtless hot competition between the two!
Our Year 8 and Year 10 Athletics teams competed in the Flintshire Schools’ competition at Deeside earlier this week. The final results have not yet been published, but we are so proud of the competitive spirit and performances of all our students. Notably, Dan (Year 8) won the overall high jump and long jump events. Great job, Dan! We hope to share more positive results soon.
Well done to everyone in the Years 8 and 9 Girls’ Cricket teams, who competed in the North East Wales Schools’ competition at Hawarden Cricket Club recently. It was a great day, and our girls were a credit to us, performing to a fine standard against several strong teams on a really hot day!
Our KS3 basketball team, ‘Boston Celtics’, visited Aberystwyth University, where they played in the Welsh National finals this week. The team showed great form in qualifying for the finals, and everyone had a great day, winning one of the games and losing two against a strong field of teams from around Wales. Well done, everybody!
Special Mentions
We would like to give a special mention to Charlie (Year 9), who has recently qualified to represent North East Wales at the national championships in high jump this summer. We are all rooting for you; go for it, Charlie!
In tennis, we can report that all our boys and girls won in both their singles and doubles events against the Mold Alun tennis team this week. Some of our players are not far from Wimbledon now!
National Schools Sports Week
Next week is National Schools Sports Week. We will run various activities and competitions during lunchtime and after school. We hope for excellent participation as we encourage our young people and staff to enjoy all the fun, camaraderie, and many other benefits that being physically active can bring.
Yesterday, our AS PE students enjoyed an informal interview with Sports Commentator Jonny Bryan, an ex-student of Castell Alun. Jonny talked at length about his career path, highlighting when he commentated on the Olympic Games. Many students felt inspired by the famous people Jonny has interviewed to date. We are always keen to provide such opportunities for each of our students.
Promoting Bilingualism and Cultural Activities
We love promoting activities outside the standard curriculum, especially when they further our students’ appreciation of bilingualism. Please take a quick look at the following link for a leaflet advertising a programme of events available to all families at the Greenfield Valley Heritage Park.
It’s a hot one today, and let’s hope that the weekend weather isn’t too disappointing!
Mwynhewch y tywydd braf!
See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
