School Blog (21/04/23)

Welcome to the School Blog. We trust you have all managed to enjoy the Easter break and hope that the fine weather we had during the first week will return soon. School is very much back in session, and even this week, our Year 10 students have been sitting their Welsh oral examinations.

We are extremely grateful for the effort and commitment of the many staff who ran revision sessions in the school building over the holidays. The vast majority of these sessions were exceptionally well attended, and students were thankful for the extra support. With the main public examination period now imminent, we are all keen to support each of our students in every way possible. Once again, please remind your children that staff are always available and willing to help with any difficulties, whether emotional or academic.

The Year 10 ski trip returned during the Easter break, and everyone had a superb time. Despite the lengthy outward journey and some unwanted delays, our students and staff embraced the excellent weather and fine skiing conditions. The trip was a great success, with plenty of progress made on the ski slopes amidst stunning scenery. Staff and students reported that all the evening activities were great fun, particularly the Bowlio Deg (traditional Austrian skittles). The frivolities included many party games, competitions, and a pizza night in St. Michael. We would like to thank everyone who made this trip possible, especially Miss Sarah Edwards and the team who accompanied the students.

Our congratulations go to Celyn (Year 10) for a recent appearance on television. Also to Poppy (Year 13), who competed for Wales U18 in the recent Tri-Nations rugby competition.

We are always keen to encourage all students to engage in extra-curricular activities. Students who have participated in these clubs were asked to complete a card for a draw, and Mr. Ellis selected Esme and Amelia (both Year 7) as winners. Well done to the girls and to everyone else making the most of the opportunities available outside standard lessons at Castell Alun. Please note that a new extra-curricular timetable has been published and is available here.

Looking ahead to next week, Welsh oral examinations continue for Year 11 students. Sixth Form foreign language students will also sit their spoken assessments. On Thursday, we will run a transition day for some of our local primary school students. This is to help them become more familiar with Castell Alun, our staff, lessons, and routines.

On Friday, several local businesses will participate in our Dragon’s Den Year 12 Enterprise Day. This is always a highlight of the year. We are incredibly grateful for the support of these individuals who bring their expertise and guidance to enhance the learning experiences of our students.

One final reminder: Monday, 1st May, and Monday, 8th May, are both Bank Holidays this year. The Monday, 8th May, Bank Holiday is part of the King’s Coronation weekend celebrations.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
