School Blog (22/01/21)

Welcome to the School Blog. This Wednesday’s Welsh Government briefing provided clarity on the awarding of examination grades, positioning schools centrally in this process. We’ve communicated Qualification Wales’s directives to all examination class students and parents/carers. While details are still forthcoming, we know we’ll rely on our assessment data to determine robust, evidence-based final grades for our students. We’re committed to keeping you informed and ensuring our grading process is transparent and fair.

Unfortunately, our first ‘Virtual Parents’ Evening’ for Year 10 faced technical issues due to a nationwide SchoolCloud collapse. We deeply apologize to families affected and will ensure you receive all missed feedback. Discussions with SchoolCloud are ongoing to prevent future issues. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this frustrating experience.

Our Sixth Form Virtual Open Evening is available on our website, attracting interest from both Castell Alun and other schools. Mr. Kevin Davies and his team are looking forward to discussing the diverse courses available and helping students find their best fit.

Tyler Holland, a Year 8 student and swimming champion, has shown remarkable resilience and dedication. Despite training restrictions, Tyler excelled in the virtual Welsh Nationals, winning a silver medal and achieving top placements in multiple events. His early morning training sessions and unwavering commitment are truly inspiring. Congratulations, Tyler, on your well-deserved success!

This January, our staff embarked on a fitness challenge to complete 120,000 minutes of exercise to support two special causes. We aim to raise funds for Lewis White and Jo Britten, both closely connected to our community and facing significant challenges. Lewis needs specialist equipment for everyday activities, and Jo, a former teacher affected by Huntington’s disease, has been an advocate for the Huntington’s Disease Association. Further details and donation information are available on our school’s website.

As we pass ‘Blue Monday’, let’s remember that it’s okay to acknowledge when things are tough. George Bernard Shaw once said, “Both optimists and pessimists contribute to society. The optimist invents the aeroplane, the pessimist the parachute.” This perspective highlights the value of diverse viewpoints in navigating challenges.

Our school community is stronger together, and the support we provide each other is invaluable, especially now. Thank you for all that you do to support our collective efforts.

Have a wonderful weekend, and take care of yourselves and your families.
