School Blog (05/07/24)

Welcome to the School Blog. We begin this week on a somber note. Our former colleague, Miss Jo Britten (Geography), has sadly passed away after a long battle with illness. Miss Britten, who served as Subject Leader for Geography, always brought cheer to everyone around her. Her positive attitude brightened the day for staff and students alike, making her incredibly popular. We deeply miss her and mourn the loss of a professional and warm-hearted colleague and friend. However, we also cherish the countless happy memories she left us.

On Monday, our Year 10 students participated in a highly successful Careers Day. Students found the information both informative and helpful. Many had fun exploring potential career paths and ways to achieve their goals. We would like to extend a big diolch to everyone who contributed to the success of the day.

Last weekend, several students travelled to Condover Hall for a netball trip. Competition was fierce, and enthusiasm ran high! We are thrilled to report that our Year 10 and Year 8 teams won the cup for Castell Alun. Many students delivered outstanding individual performances. The weekend was fantastic, and behaviour was exemplary, further enhancing Castell Alun’s reputation. Diolch yn fawr to all participating students for your conduct, and da iawn for your excellent sporting performances.

In further sporting news, our tennis teams showcased strong performances at Myddleton College in the Wales Tennis Competition. Could the next junior Wimbledon champion come from Castell Alun? In athletics, our Year 7 boys’ and girls’ teams triumphed at their most recent event. A special mention goes to Beth, who equalled the Flintshire Schools’ all-time record for the 1200m! We are incredibly proud of you all!

Castell Alun is now set to perform ‘Matilda Jr.’! After a successful show for Year 6 students during their induction last week, our younger students are ready to showcase their talents to a larger audience. Please book your tickets via TicketSource and treat yourself to an evening of dramatic entertainment on Wednesday 10th or Thursday 11th July. With magical moments, experience the brilliance of Roald Dahl as we bring this heartfelt story to life!

A huge diolch to everyone who visited our GCSE and Sixth Form Art exhibition this week. The artwork speaks volumes, and the high standards have impressed many visitors.

With just a week to go, excitement is building for our annual school Sports Day on Friday 12th July. We’re all eager to see if any long-standing records will be broken this year. If we cannot hold the event on this date, the backup plan is Monday 15th July, though the weather forecast suggests this won’t be necessary. Please ensure all students have sun cream if needed on the day.

We wish the very best to students and staff heading to Berlin this weekend. We look forward to hearing your stories upon your safe return.

Due to the busy nature of the last weeks of the academic year our next School Blog will be available on Friday 17th July. Diolch!
