School Blog (03/03/23)

Welcome to the School Blog. Thank you once again for your patience during these challenging times of industrial action. We will monitor the situation and keep you well-informed of any developments before the next planned action. This is currently scheduled for the 15th and 16th of March.

In the final week of the last half term, the Cymraeg department hosted a successful transition event. They welcomed Year 6 students from several of our primary schools. Year 6 and 7 students enjoyed a performance from a theatre company, which retold the journey of our Cymraeg language. Some brave students even participated!

Following this, further activities focused on developing team-working skills, and many students won prizes during the quiz, of course! We are eager to run more such immersive events. These sessions clearly ignite a passion in learners to use Cymraeg confidently and encourage others to do the same.

This academic year, our St. David’s Day celebrations are extensive and somewhat extended! Due to our Year 10 internal examinations, we were unable to hold our usual whole-school assembly on the 1st of March itself. This celebratory event is now scheduled for Wednesday next week.

Students have engaged in Dydd Gwyl Dewi activities during form time this week, with various activities on offer. The interactive quizzes have been particularly popular, and we have also seen good attendance at our bingo and other competition sessions during the school day. Staff also raised £70 for Marie Curie by enjoying cacen and paned at break time.

This week in our school library, students could choose a wrapped book based on a simple brief introduction, offering a clue about the story. These surprise books were a huge hit and helped promote our library and the many new books we now have available to students. With even more books yet to arrive, the library will be better resourced than ever and an inviting environment for students to develop their oracy skills. Furthermore, we celebrated World Book Day over the last few days, and our ‘Masked Reader’ competition is ongoing. The results of this extremely popular competition should be available next week, and we might even publish some of the masked reader photographs for your amusement!

We are very pleased to announce that Year 10 students are handling their internal examination period in a mature and informed manner. It is clear that most have engaged in a robust revision period and are meeting the personal standards expected of them. Any examinations missed due to the industrial action have been rescheduled for Monday, 6th March.

Today, a large group of Year 8 students have gone on a trip to Glan Llyn to further develop their Welsh language skills while pursuing a passion for outdoor education. We eagerly await their stories and photographs next week.

On Tuesday, 7th March, the Castell Alun Friends Association will meet at the school at 6.30 pm. New members, or anyone interested in learning more, are always welcome to attend.

In sporting news, our U15 Girls’ Cricket Team recently played in the North East Wales round of the ECB trophy, winning three games while losing two others. Da iawn, girls! Additionally, our Year 7 and Year 9 netball teams played against Hawarden, with Year 7 winning 14-2 and Year 9 securing an impressive 22-1 victory. Congratulations to Nell (Year 11), who has qualified for the National Netball Championships in March with her Mold Netball Club.

In Year 7 news, Idele participated in the North Wales Regional Swimming Championships in Llandudno. She performed exceptionally well, placing 1st in her age category in the 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke, and also 3rd in the 200m individual medley. Idele has now qualified to compete in the Swim Wales National Championships in Swansea. Brilliant stuff! Finally, a big congratulations to Aidan (Year 9), who recently played for the FAW North team in Cardiff, winning all the matches he participated in.

It looks like it’s getting a little colder again this weekend. Wrap up warm and have a nice time.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
