School Blog (26/09/25)

What a busy and inspiring week it has been here at Castell Alun! We begin by celebrating the huge success of our New Intake Open Evening, which took place last night. The school was buzzing, with corridors and classrooms filled with families eager to learn about life at Castell Alun. It was fantastic to see so many visitors engaging with activities and speaking positively about staff and students. A heartfelt thank-you goes to everyone who helped make the evening such a triumph for our community. Your hard work and enthusiasm ensured visitors left with a lasting and wonderful impression of Castell Alun.

This week’s blog also shines a spotlight on a number of remarkable achievements, both inside and outside of school. From our students’ outstanding performances at the Mold Food Festival, to Miss Robinson’s incredible climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, and the inspiring sporting journey of Hallie, who is representing Castell Alun on national and international hockey platforms – there is so much to celebrate.

Read on to find out more about these fantastic stories and to keep up to date with upcoming events in school.

A huge well done to our Year 10 and Year 11 students, who recently represented Castell Alun at the Mold Food Festival, where they not only supported the event but also took part in the competition. Year 11 students did brilliantly, coming runners-up and winning a fantastic £500 for the school, which was an incredible achievement and a real confidence boost as they cooked live on stage in front of an audience. All of our volunteers showed great commitment and enthusiasm, making the school extremely proud. A special mention goes to Year 10 student Jaxon, who worked tirelessly across the whole weekend and impressed so much that he was offered a week’s work experience at Bryn Williams’ brand-new Michelin-starred restaurant at Theatre Clwyd. Year 10 student, Ben, also gave up his time to support the event and gained valuable experience alongside Jaxon. Students who volunteered included Summer, Ben and Jaxon, while our competition team consisted of Oscar and Macey, who both showcased fantastic skills on stage.

None of this would have been possible without the organisation and support of Mrs Molloy and Mrs Davies, who we would like to sincerely thank for their time, encouragement, and for accompanying the students throughout the festival. Congratulations again to everyone involved – you have done Castell Alun proud!

A huge congratulations to Miss Lauren Robinson, our Assistant Director of Sixth Form Studies, who achieved something truly remarkable over the summer by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Not only did Miss Robinson make it all the way to the summit, but she reached the top just in time to witness the breathtaking sunrise – an unforgettable experience and a testament to her determination and resilience.

Through her challenge, Miss Robinson also managed to raise an incredible £1,350 for charity, making her achievement even more meaningful. We are all extremely proud of her accomplishment and inspired by her courage, perseverance and generosity.

We are very proud to share the sporting success of Year 8 student Hallie, who excels in ice and roller hockey. Hallie has been invited to England trials for U13 ice hockey, competing for one of 17 squad places. Over 60 athletes will trial, making this an incredible opportunity that highlights Hallie’s dedication, skill, and countless training hours.

In addition to ice hockey, Hallie has been selected to train and compete with Toxic Hockey UK. This elite roller hockey team includes talented players from across the UK and prepares for major international competitions. She will attend training sessions, a photoshoot, and prepare for a tournament in Spain at Easter 2026.
Her commitment and talent have also earned trials to represent Team GB in roller hockey. Opportunities include the European Championships, the Emerald Cup in Ireland, and State Wars in America.

Hallie currently plays U12 mixed and U16 girls’ ice hockey, as well as roller hockey in several categories. Her dedication, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm are inspiring, and her achievements are now recognised on prestigious sporting platforms. We wish Hallie every success in her upcoming trials and competitions, and we look forward to following her exciting journey. She is a fantastic role model for younger students, showing what can be achieved with talent, commitment, and determination.

This week we also say a very fond farewell to Mrs Sandra Flackett, who has retired from Castell Alun after more than twenty years of dedicated service. During her time at the school she held a variety of important roles and contributed so much to daily life, always showing kindness, commitment, and professionalism. Her hard work has touched the lives of countless students and colleagues, and she will be greatly missed. We thank Mrs Flackett for everything she has done for the school and wish her a long, happy, and healthy retirement.
