School Blog (07/10/22)

Welcome to the School Blog. It was delightful to see numerous Year 10 families yesterday at our Information Evening. Everyone agreed it was a worthwhile occasion, filled with valuable information. Diolch to all families and staff involved in the event.

We conducted a fire drill on Tuesday, and we are pleased to report the building evacuation went smoothly. Fortunately, the weather held, allowing us to return to school before the rain started.

Year 7 students enjoyed a fantastic day yesterday, exploring a wonderful selection of books provided by Mold Bookshop. Each student exchanged their £7 book token for a book of their choice. Next up, Year 8 and 9 will receive tokens as part of the Welsh Government’s ‘Love Reading’ project.

Scientific evidence shows that reading can both stimulate and relax a person. We are thrilled that all Key Stage 3 students will have the chance to pick up a new book, enhancing this vital skill for life, which will benefit them in countless ways.

Several Key Stage 4 and 5 students enjoyed a visit to the theatre last evening. Experiences like these truly enrich our curriculum, and “Othello” remains a classic piece.

Congratulations to Mr. Murray Crow, Mrs. Barbara Jones, and Mrs. Colette Fletcher for their success in the recent parent governor elections. Many thanks to all who nominated themselves and participated in the vote. Our governors play an essential role in our school, and we deeply appreciate their dedication to the Castell Alun community.

This year, we continue our partner school project in France. Many students have prepared introductory cards in a foreign language, eagerly awaiting what they will receive in return.

The Castell Alun Friends Association (CAFA) will hold their AGM on Thursday, 15th November, at 6.30 pm in school. Anyone interested in attending or joining CAFA is most welcome. CAFA raises funds to support students in various ways, including through a lottery with weekly draws and entry into a national weekly draw, potentially winning £25,000. Please note, CAFA will host a fashion show in school on Friday, 25th November. Tickets are priced at £3 each, with more details to follow.

On Thursday next week at 5.30 pm, the school will host a Duke of Edinburgh information evening for anyone interested in this exciting scheme. Please feel free to attend and learn more.

On Friday, 14th October, we will celebrate Shwmae Sumae Day. All students are invited to wear something red, white, or green. There is no cost for the day, and various Welsh activities will be available for all students and staff. We want everyone to enjoy the event and take pride in their Welsh heritage.

Congratulations to the Year 8 Boys’ Football team for winning their first game of the Welsh Cup against Bryn Hyfryd 4-0 this week. Well done to the Year 8 students who participated in the XC Run, demonstrating the importance of healthy bodies and positive mindsets. Additionally, we are proud of our Year 9 Rugby squad, who scored seven tries in an amazing performance, beating Mold Alun this week.
