School Blog (23/06/23)

Welcome to the School Blog. Today marks the final external examination for our GCSE and Sixth Form students, and we’re all thrilled that this day has finally arrived! We must credit our wonderful students for their mature approach during this demanding time.

We have fantastic news from our Modern Languages Department—Alice and James (Year 9) have both been selected as winners in the Oxford University Translation Competition. Over 15,000 students took part across the UK, and this is an outstanding achievement. Both students were selected as winners in the North Wales competition. Alice and James will now compete in the National Competition against all the regional winners.

A special congratulations to Alice, as this is her second time winning for North Wales! The Modern Languages Department is incredibly proud of both students, and the entire school team wishes them the very best for the National Competition. Félicitations / Herzlichen Glückwunsch from us all!

On Monday, many of our Year 12 students attended a university and apprenticeship careers fair at the Alun School in Mold. This event followed last week’s visit to Liverpool, which focused on supporting students with potential UCAS applications. We look forward to welcoming students from other schools on Friday for our external induction day. These students will attend lessons in their chosen subjects and gain a deeper understanding of life at Castell Alun.

Next week will be extremely busy! On Tuesday at 6:30 pm, we’ll hold our New Intake Parents’ Evening in the Sports Hall, with talks from staff closely involved with Year 7. Parents and carers will have the opportunity to meet their child’s new group tutor, tour the school, and purchase useful items for September. Following this, our New Intake Induction Day for students will take place on Thursday, 29th June. We’ve heard that current Year 6 students are very excited about spending the day with us and meeting new friends.

On Thursday evening, we’ll hold our Year 11 Prom at St. David’s Park Hotel from 7 pm until 11 pm. We’ll take plenty of photos and share some with you next week.

A quick reminder: CAFA (Castell Alun Friends Association) will hold their annual car boot sale at school on Saturday, 1st July, from 10 am to 12:30 pm. Stallholders can enter from 9:30 am, with the last cars admitted at 9:55 am. The cost to pitch is £5, and you can book your spot in advance to avoid disappointment. A great variety of items will be on sale, including refreshments and a pre-loved uniform stall. If you’d like to donate any old uniform, please leave it at school reception before Saturday, 1st July. Last year’s event was very popular, and much-needed funds were raised to support our students.

Last week, we mentioned our new way to share information with you about your children in school. All parents and carers can now access our new parent app. We appreciate that the information on the app may not be wholly accurate for the current academic year when you first log on. However, by making the app accessible now, we intend to check its viability and troubleshoot any potential issues before the new academic year. To date, around 600 families have accessed the app, and we hope to ensure all parents and carers can do so before the close of the current year.

Llongyfarchiadau/congratulations to Nellie (Year 8), who recently achieved a Merit in her LCM Music Theatre Grade 3 examination. A huge well done also to our Year 7/8 girls, who came 1st in their recent North East Wales Athletics competition and will now represent us in the Welsh finals next month. Well done to the Year 9 lads, who narrowly missed out on qualification for the finals, finishing 4th.

We hope the weather remains favourable for our Year 10 students on their Duke of Edinburgh Expedition this weekend. We wish them all a fantastic time.

See you back here soon for the next School Blog!
